Winter Solstice Ideas: Welcoming the Light Into our Lives
In 2024, the Winter solstice is on December 21st. It can fall on the 20th, the 21st, or the 22nd. It’s always the darkest day of the year – with the longest night – in the Northern Hemisphere. The Winter solstice marks the beginning of the light’s return into our daily lives. Take some time to ground into your reflections of the past year and your intentions for the year ahead during the Winter solstice, if it feels right. Here are a few ideas of how to take time and space to pause, reflect, and set intentions for your home, life, work, and play for our next collective trip around the sun.
Environmentally Friendly Shopping Tips for the Holidays
The holiday shopping season can present a problem for those of us concerned about climate change. We want to find gifts for our loved ones, but we are also aware that the consumption the holiday shopping season encourages is bad for our planet. So what is an environmentally conscious shopper to do? There is no form of consumption that avoids environmental harm completely, but by being more conscious of this, you can reduce that harm. Read this piece from volunteer Monterey Buchanan.
Talking Climate at the Holiday Table
“The holidays offer an opportunity to raise the climate crisis with friends and family at the dinner table. This can turn awkward if someone there is still in denial but most likely climate change will come up anyway: What starts out as small talk about the weather may soon be about the impact of record-breaking, mega-storms, catastrophic wildfires, drought, and clear sky flooding in various parts of the nation.”
A climate conversation at the holiday table can be challenging. Here is some advice on how to keep the peace, listen with compassion, look for shared goals and bring up solutions on energy and pollution that benefit us all.
Recent good news: Colorado Commission Stays Highly Contested Draco Pad
“On Friday November 15, 2024, the Colorado Energy & Carbon Management Commission (ECMC) voted unanimously to stay the Draco Oil and Gas Development Plan (OGDP) proposed by Extraction Oil & Gas Inc./Civitas Resources. The plan, which would have allowed Civitas to horizontally drill and fracture 26 wellbores, some extending five miles underground, under the Town of Erie — including residential areas and schools — has been indefinitely paused. This decision ensures that public health, safety, welfare, environmental protection, and wildlife resources remain at the forefront of Colorado’s energy policies.”

A huge thanks to our December Climate Hero of the Month; Finn Jackson!

Finn has been involved with 350 Colorado for about 6 months. He got his start in climate advocacy in college (about 6 years ago) where he led a campaign for his university to adopt a climate action plan. Since graduation, he’s been involved with many climate organizations (Laramie Alliance of Renewable Energy, Sierra Club Wyoming, Park County Citizens for Sustainability, Citizens Climate Lobby, and the Sunrise Movement). His volunteer activities have included connecting like-minded community members and lobbying state and national legislators.
Finn works at EcoCycle’s Hard-to-Recycle facility in Boulder. When he’s not sorting trash, on or off the clock, he spends his free time reading, playing piano, tinkering with his bikes, exploring new and delicious food, and spending time outside any way he can.
