Help Build the Movement Against Fracking – Written by Ian Thom

Fracking has become the focal point for the environmental movement in Colorado. The rapidly increasing number of fracking wells across the state has detrimental effects on the health of Coloradans and our environment. We see extraction rigs on our public lands, near neighborhoods, and even right next to schools. These wells contribute to the climate crisis but also have direct and devastating effects on Coloradan’s health and well-being.

To address the issue of fracking and combat what the oil and gas industry are doing to our state, we must change the discourse and educate the public and elected officials on the issue. By building public opposition against fracking we can create the political power necessary to enact vital change. Sharing your story, expressing your concerns and calling for strong climate leadership in Letters to the Editor and Op-Eds is an incredibly effective way to inform the public and elected officials about the issues associated with fracking because the Opinions pages of a newspaper are among the most read sections.

Here’s how you can take action now:

A recent study from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus identified some terrifying impacts from fracking. They found that mothers living near oil and natural gas well sites are 40-70% more likely to have children with congenital heart defects. This is just the latest of a plethora of studies demonstrating the adverse health effects from fracking and the need to take urgent action to protect our communities. Practices that cause such harm must not be permitted to continue, let alone expand.

Take action and elevate your voice by writing to your local newspaper about your experience and concerns with fracking. If enough people desire and call for change we can make it a reality!
