Thanks so much to all 250 or so of you who turned out Tuesday for the Whistle Stop Rally at Union Station to celebrate Coloradans headed to the People’s Climate March in NYC and activists already on the People’s Climate Train!

ClimateTrainLR-2602We heard powerful, moving statements from several of the more than 40 Coloradans heading to New York for the march including 350 Colorado leaders Katie Falkenberg and Isaac Rivera, Kids Against Fracking leader Emma Bray, CU Fossil Free divestment campaign student leader Franky Navarrette, Rev. Nelson Bock of Colorado Interfaith Power and Light, Frack Free Denver leader Barbara Donachy, Sierra Club volunteer and Karen Dike.  The mood of the crowd was celebratory while resolute as we sang, chanted, and listened reverently as Rev. Peter Sawtell of Eco-Justice Ministries led a commissioning for those representing Colorado at the march.

The crowd gathered by the fountains in front of the newly renovated historic Union Station in Denver to hear from these local leaders.  We then marched around to the back of the station to greet and hear from several activists travelling from the west coast on the “People’s Climate Train” – an Amtrak turned-activist workshop center and meeting space for more than 170 people travelling for days across country to reach NYC, thanks to the work of the Center for Biological Diversity.  West coast speakers included Climate Train organizer Valerie Love, with the Center for Biological Diversity, youth organizer Emili Abdel-Ghany , and environmental and Native American rights organizer Pennie Opal Plant.  The train arrived in NYC Thurs. night in time for weekend activities building up to the big march on Sunday, Sept. 21st.

ClimateTrainLR-2703As world leaders meet and discuss the climate crisis, as many as half a million people are expected to march outside, demanding “a world with an economy that works for people and the planet, a world safe from the ravages of climate change, and a world with good jobs, clean air and water, and healthy communities”. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is urging governments to support an ambitious global agreement to dramatically reduce global warming pollution.
