Together with allies, we marched and delivered a letter to Black Hills Energy in Pueblo addressing their proposed rate hike as well as the plan to replace Pueblo’s decommissioned coal plant with gas or nuclear, neither of which are true climate solutions.

Pueblo residents have higher utility bills than most of Colorado, while bearing more pollution from energy production.

We do not want to benefit from Pueblo being used as an environmental sacrifice zone!

If you didn’t make it to the action, you can get involved by sending an email to the Public Utilities Comission and Xcel Energy. The more they hear that we want just and renewable solutions for Pueblo, the better!

Here are some photos from the event. (Thanks so much to Christian O’Rourke for the incredible photography!)

What did you march for?

Across the US, for-profit utilities are making decisions based on grabbing power and profits, looking to maximize their earnings instead of speeding the shift to safe, affordable, reliable and clean energy. In 2020, 34 million U.S. households, or 27 percent of all households, reported difficulty paying their energy bills or kept their homes at an unsafe temperature because of energy cost concerns.

Meanwhile, shareholders make bigger profits than ever.

That’s why we’re building pressure on our utilities, Xcel and Black Hills, to say No more False Solutions!, and hold them responsible for paying for the “transition” that they have made millions of dollars on.

This is especially important to our region because Pueblo is an environmental justice community that consistently gets the pollution from these large utilities, and none of the power. It would help to stop the proposal for a nuclear plant or carbon capture storage at the existing Xcel plant, while opening up funding for just and clean energy in our community.

Who was there?
