The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate our independence as a nation, but it is also a time to reflect on many of the things we are still dependent on. For many, the Fourth of July is synonymous with eating lots of meat — in fact, the US eats 155 million hot dogs on the 4th of July alone, more than any other day of the year. Scientists from around the world have recognized that avoiding meat and dairy products is the single biggest way individuals can reduce their environmental impact.  Reports from the United Nations show that globally agriculture contributes to 14% of total greenhouse gas emissions, 70% of freshwater consumption, and 38% of land use. The good news is that traditional Fourth of July staples can be made using plant-based alternatives, without sacrificing any flavor! Below is a list of some plant-based alternatives to traditional 4th of July meals! Happy feasting!
