During Energy Assessments, MHYC’s team of young adults (Corpsmembers) provide free retrofits to income-qualified homes, including energy and water-efficient showerheads, sink aerators, programmable thermostats, LED lightbulbs, and Ultra-High efficiency toilets. These energy saving measures mean significant bill reductions for clients, who can save up to $250 a year due to MHYC’s services.

MHYC’s unique program not only allows individuals and families to see reduced utility bills, but also reduces Denver’s carbon footprint, allowing individuals to take part in environmental safeguarding without financial barriers. The services conducted in 2019 by MHYC kept 21,000 tons of CO2 out of the air, which is the equivalent of the CO2 reduction performed by 18,000 acres of forest.

Since 2008, Mile High Youth Corps’ Energy & Water Conservation team has provided energy-efficiency/retrofit measures in 45,000 homes, producing an energy savings of 13.5 million kWh. Corpsmembers have helped to eliminate 82,000 tons of CO2, which is the equivalent of removing 5,000 cars off the road for a year. The water conserved over this same period totals over 475 million gallons.

This year, MHYC aims to conduct Energy Assessments in over a thousand income-qualified homes. Additionally, MHYC partners with Colorado’s LEAP (Low-Income Energy Assistance Program) to help clients sign up for services, which includes bill-pay assistance. Through MHYC’s Energy Assessments, clients are also referred to Energy Resource Center, who provides free weatherization services (insulation and furnace replacements) that further reduce carbon footprints and utility costs.

Mile High Youth Corps hopes to continue partnering with individuals and families in local communities, as well as businesses and nonprofits to advocate for social and environmental justice.

 About Mile High Youth Corps

Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization established in 1992 to give youth ages 16 to 24 a chance to earn an income and learn hands-on job skills while serving in their communities. In its first year, 20 youth served Denver neighborhoods through a single 10-week program. Today, MHYC engages more than 200 youth (called Corpsmembers) every year through several comprehensive programs that integrate paid work experience on community service projects with leadership development, career and college exploration, and education. Notably, in addition to the Energy and Water Program, MHYC’s Land Program completes conservation, recreation, and restoration projects on public lands. During our 28 year history, Mile High Youth Corps has grown from a small, seasonal, neighborhood- based organization to a comprehensive, year-round, regional program serving 23 counties from two regional offices in Metro Denver and the Southern Front Range of Colorado. Our mission is to help youth make a difference in themselves and their community through meaningful service opportunities and educational experiences.
