Thank you all so much for participating in CO Climate Disaster Awareness Week – Jan. 26-30!
From wildfires and extreme heat to floods, drought, and skyrocketing insurance costs, climate disasters are no longer distant threats. Climate Disasters are happening here and now, to our families, our homes, and our communities.
January 26–30, 2026, people across Colorado joined together for CO Climate Disasters Awareness Week to uplift real stories from those impacted by climate disasters and to demand bold, urgent action from our elected leaders. This week focused on making the human cost of climate inaction impossible to ignore and turning our shared experiences into collective power. Our Goal was to educate the public and our leaders about the increasingly severe climate impacts happening around Colorado and the costs – to people’s lives and financial impact.
What happened:
-
- 1) All week: Photo and art exhibit in the Foyer of the State Capitol Building – Photos and artwork showed the climate disasters, extreme weather and other impacts Coloradans around the state are experiencing. Over 200 people wrote letters to their state legislators urging them to go experience the exhibit and attend the Press Conference that was held on Jan. 30th.
- 2) Jan. 30th, 11am – Press Conference in the Foyer of the Capitol (where the photo/art exhibit was) to release a report from the Colorado Fiscal Institute (CFI) about Colorado Climate Damages and Adaptation Costs (from 1995->present->2050)
- Extreme Weather Survivors, businesses and community leaders from around the state share their stories of how they have been impacted from various climate impacts and disasters.
- CFI spoke and released their new report.
- Four legislators spoke about their concerns and bills they plan to introduce to address these impacts and reduce climate pollution from burning fossil fuels.
- 3) All week: Traditional & Social Media Outreach took place to raise awareness about the serious climate impacts that Coloradans are already experiencing. We shared stories from extreme weather survivors and others impacted to share through social and traditional media. 60+ partner organizations and hundreds of volunteers participated, sharing stories with us to share, submitting their quotes for press materials, posting on social media, and sending letters to the editors of their local papers.
This week of action was sponsored by numerous allied organizations, including 350 Colorado, Black Parents United Foundation, Clean Energy Action, Climate Reality Project Metro Denver, Climate Reality Project Northern Colorado, Colorado Jewish Climate Action, Colorado Rising for Communities, Extreme Weather Survivors, Good Trouble Climate Network, Healthy Air & Water Colorado, Mi Familia En Accion, Moms Clean Air Force Colorado, Mountain Mamas, Physicians for Social Responsibility Colorado, Resilient Denver, Save the Aurora Reservoir, Sierra Club Colorado, Sunrise Movement Denver, Third Act Colorado, Together Colorado, Womxn from the Mountain, and the 55 member groups of Colorado Coalition for a Livable Climate.

On Jan. 30, 2026, the Colorado Fiscal Institute (CFI), released a “Colorado Climate Damages and Adaptation Costs Report” that tells us that Colorado conservatively faces total projected costs in 2025–2050 on the order of $50–$54B, of which $36–$37B represents additional costs directly attributable to climate change (plus defined resilience investments) – and that’s just for the impacts quantified in the report. The report was released as part of our CO Climate Disasters Awareness Week press conference featuring frontline voices and community leaders. The message was clear: Coloradans are already paying the price for climate inaction, and our leaders must act now to prepare for and prevent worsening climate impacts and disasters.
