Sophie Chivers is 17 and a senior at Niwot High School. Born and raised in Boulder, nature has always been a huge part of her life. She and her mother had been supporters of the climate movement for a long time, but in late 2019, Sophie decided that she wanted to be more involved. Sophie is a natural youth leader, serving as one of the youth organizers of the September Colorado Climate Strikes and later actions and speaking at numerous events.

She has continued her work through a volunteer internship with 350 Colorado where she has supported numerous campaign efforts. Sophie has served on our Defund Climate Disaster campaign committee, playing a key role in 350 Colorado’s Public Banking Campaign and leading efforts to create a new Colorado Public Banking Coalition website. She has also been leading and heavily supporting youth efforts to fight fracking at Niwot High School, and has mobilized turnout for local oil and gas hearings, calling for a ban on fracking in Boulder County and pressing for stronger protections. In addition to speaking out against fracking at the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and representing 350 Colorado and youth organizers at press conferences, Sophie has also organized a radio interview series with KGNU focusing on environmental issues and the impacts of fracking in our state. She was part of a panel interviewed live on the issue of fracking in March, 2020. Additionally, she is serving on the 350 Boulder County Leadership Council, assisting with monthly meetings and team treasury duties.

Next year, Sophie will study Human Ecology, Marine Science, and Environmental Conservation at the College of the Atlantic and will continue to participate as much as she is able in the climate
justice movement. “I have found the most amazing community in 350 Colorado and the Climate Justice movement. I have never felt welcomed and connected in this way before, and I feel so lucky to get to be a part of such an incredible, supportive community!” – Sophie Chivers

Sophie is super smart, hardworking, tenacious, dependable and such a pleasure to work with. We’re so lucky and grateful to have Sophie as one of our interns and one of our most dedicated volunteers in the 350 Colorado community!

Sophie has been critical in helping to make the youth climate strikes in Colorado a success! She is a smart, passionate intern who is always willing to lend a hand and never backs away from a challenge.
