The Sisters of St. Francis in Denver, Colorado, are a community of minores, rooted in the Gospel and grounded in the Franciscan spirit of Gospel living, committed to listening and supporting one another through sacred conversation, shared leadership, and personal initiative.

The Sisters are guided by the teachings of St. Francis, an early environmentalist, recognizing the beauty and connectedness of all of creation. They emphasize social justice and work to achieve a sustainable future, especially given the growing impacts of the climate crisis.

Liz Fuhr, a climate activist, has continued to lead in the Sisters of Saint Francis’ sustainability and climate priorities, as the urgent need to protect Earth becomes graver than ever. She leads an ongoing Franciscan Contemplative Prayer group and summer Franciscan Rocky Mountain Retreats to connect folks back to the natural world, the earth, and our environment and provide an opportunity to experience the wisdom of the peoples who for millennia lived in balance with nature on this land and note its relationship to the Franciscan perspective. She desires that others not only grow closer and more connected to the natural world, but work to protect it and become a steward of the land as well.

“I want to serve. I want to give back. I have received this love, and my heart wants to surrender and give it back. I want to steward, to care for what I have been given. So, my ministry has evolved into care of Mother Earth. I have an invite, an ask. Is nature bidding you to contemplate, to fall in love, and to protect and cherish her?” – Liz Fuhr

The Sisters of Saint Francis and Liz Fuhr truly emulate what it means to be a climate steward and champion. They have been long-time supporters of 350Colorado and our climate work, and have made it possible to continue protecting our environment and climate for generations to come.

The environment is a gift from God, and the way we respond with gratitude is to pass a healthy environment on to the next generation” – Liz Fuhr (https://coloradonewsline.com/2020/09/30/respect-for-the-environment-is-a-universal-moral-value/
